Lot 54:
Description
This vintage commercial reproduction on canvas is after the original maritime painting by Montague Dawson (British, 1890–1973), titled The Thermopylae Leaving Foochow. The scene depicts the green-hulled clipper ship Thermopylae being assisted by steam-powered tugboats within a busy harbor at sunset. The atmospheric composition includes several other tall ships in the background and a small rowing boat with figures in the foreground. The work bears a printed signature MONTAGUE DAWSON in the lower-left corner along with a copyright mark for F&R (Frost and Reed). The canvas is stretched over wooden stretcher bars.
Width: 32 inches
Height: 22 inches.
Condition report:
The work is in fair to good condition. There is visible fraying and minor paint loss along the edges where the canvas is stapled to the stretcher. Surface grime is present across the canvas. A small indentation or minor puncture is visible on the reverse, which corresponds to a mark on the front surface.
