Description
This assortment includes five distinct pieces of Southwest and Mata Ortiz pottery, representing a variety of traditional forms and decorative techniques including blackware, redware, and polychrome.
The collection features a Santa Clara Pueblo redware melon jar by artist David Baca. The vessel has a small, round form with deep vertical ribbing and a narrow neck. The base is incised with the artist name David Baca, the location Yellow Mountain, the date 89, and a central triangular mountain symbol.
A blackware seed jar from Santa Clara Pueblo is decorated with a sgraffito medallion. The central motif features three ears of corn in a sunburst design, which exposes the natural reddish clay beneath the polished black slip. The base is incised White Bear, Santa Clara Pueblo, and features a stylized paw symbol with interior hatch marks.
The collection includes a redware seed jar from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico, by artist Yoly Ledezma. This low, compressed vessel is decorated with sgraffito geometric bands and stylized bird or serpent motifs around the upper shoulder. The base is incised Yoly Ledezma.
A black-on-red polychrome jar by San Ildefonso Pueblo artist Alfred Aguilar (1933–2020) is included. The vessel has a bi-conical profile and features complex painted geometric patterns, including feather and cloud motifs, with a scalloped band at the base of the decoration. The base is incised Alfred Aguilar, San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico, and includes a stylized dragonfly symbol.
The final piece is a small earthenware jar from Jemez Pueblo by artist Laverne Loretto. The vessel has a wide shoulder and a square, slightly flared rim. It is decorated with a hand-painted black-on-red checkerboard pattern accented with white dots. The base is signed in black ink Laverne Loretto, Jemez, NM.
Redware melon jar: 4 inches diameter, 3.5 inches height
Blackware corn motif jar: 4.5 inches diameter, 3 inches height
Mata Ortiz etched jar: 4 inches diameter, 2.5 inches height
Black-on-red polychrome jar: 6.5 inches diameter, 5 inches height
Jemez checkerboard jar: 4 inches diameter, 3.5 inches height.
Condition report:
All five pieces are in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or evidence of repair. Surface finishes remain high-gloss and the painted or etched decorations are well-preserved.
