Description
This collection consists of three contemporary Hopi-Tewa polychrome ceramic seed jars, handcrafted using traditional coiling, stone-polishing, and pit-firing techniques. The vessels are executed in the Sikyatki Revival style, featuring intricate geometric and avian motifs applied in black and red-brown mineral pigments. The first item is a large, squat-profile jar with a white slip ground. The shoulder is decorated with a complex frieze of motifs including stylized parrot feathers, clouds, and geometric hatching. The base bears a hallmark of a stylized frog with webbed feet and a stippled body, identifying the piece as the work of Joy Navasie, also known as Frog Woman. The second item is a medium-sized, sharply shouldered jar with a white slip ground, featuring high-contrast geometric patterns and feather elements, also bearing the frog hallmark. The third item is a medium-sized seed jar with a tan slip decorated with bold avian motifs, including stylized eagle tails and textured panels. The base is signed Walpi and FAWN, identifying the potter as Fawn Navasie, also known as Little Fawn.
Large white-slip jar: 11.5 inches diameter, 6.5 inches height, 5.5 inches rim diameter
Medium white-slip jar: 7 inches diameter
Tan-slip jar: 7.75 inches diameter.
Condition report:
All three jars are in excellent condition. There are no visible chips, cracks, or evidence of professional restoration. The painted decorations remain crisp and well-preserved. Minor surface irregularities and firing blooms are present, which are characteristic results of the traditional outdoor pit-firing process. Clean, no smell home.
