Description

This antique monocular compound microscope was manufactured by the Spencer Lens Co. of Buffalo, New York. The instrument is constructed from black-lacquered cast iron and polished brass components. It features a compact folding horseshoe base designed for portability. The optical assembly includes a monocular tube with a single eyepiece and a triple revolving nosepiece, which currently holds two objective lenses. One objective is engraved 16mm N.A. 0.25 SPENCER LENS CO. BUFFALO, N.Y. The microscope utilizes a dual focusing system consisting of a rack-and-pinion coarse adjustment and a micrometer screw fine adjustment located on the upper limb. The square stage is equipped with two manual spring slide clips. A plano-concave mirror is mounted on a swinging arm beneath the stage to provide illumination. The foot of the microscope is engraved with a circular maker mark that reads SPENCER LENS CO. 35318 BUFFALO, N.Y.
Length: Approximately 13 inches (33 cm).

Condition report:

The instrument exhibits moderate age-appropriate wear. There are visible scuffs, scratches, and minor finish losses to the black-lacquered surfaces. The polished brass components show a natural patina with surface oxidation and tarnish. Mechanical functions, including the coarse and fine focus adjustments and the revolving nosepiece, appear to operate smoothly. The substage mirror is intact. The optical components are present but have not been tested for internal clarity or fungal growth. No storage case or additional accessories are included.
